Espionage Trial of American Journalist Resumes in Russian Court
Trial Recommences After Defense Request
The espionage trial of American journalist Evan Gershkovich resumed in a Russian court on Thursday after being brought forward at the request of his defense. Gershkovich, an imprisoned reporter for The Wall Street Journal, appeared in court.
Accusations and Allegations
Gershkovich, 32, who was accredited by Russia's Foreign Ministry, was detained in March 2023 on a reporting trip to Yekaterinburg. He was accused of espionage, an allegation that his employer, The Wall Street Journal, denounced as a "sham trial" and "a bogus accusation that will inevitably lead to a bogus conviction for an innocent man."
